Best Track Of 2013

Best Track Of 2013

HANK:

Miracles Of Modern Science
"Dear Pressure"

MEEMS by Miracles of Modern Science was probably the most enjoyable listen of 2014. An exuberant, poppy, and quixotic EP, the highlight is "Dear Pressure," a track which pays homage to recording, touring, and friendship. While most tracks arent able to transcend the one-liner or one-dimensional, Miracles of Modern Science seem to be able to one up themselves repeatedly on every track. "Dear Pressure" begins with a beguilingly muted line which explodes by the first chorus and just when you think thats not going to be repeated, Miracles of Modern Science seem to transcend and push the boundary from chorus to bridge and back. Rather than one-dimensionality, this track thrives on its incredibly intelligent instrumentation and a wry sense of humor that has been achingly absent from music since the heyday of Pavement.

ZACH:

Nerves Junior
"Intern"

There is an evil that lurks around on Nerves Juniors track "Intern".  The song begins with a confident stroll wrapped around smoky electronics that fold on themselves as the track progresses and gobbles up its previous sounds only to build and build.  If youve ever seen Blue Velvet, "Intern" is the song version of Frank, pure darkness balancing between slick grins and pure rage.

Look to the 2:51 mark to understand why this track tops 2013.  In that moment, "Intern" explodes with drums seemingly breaking on each strong hit, a grimy guitar that has the sharpness of a knife, and a lead singer crooning to the point his vocals swirl and lift out of the atmosphere occupied by the rest of the sounds.  My favorite tracks are always those that can excite the emotions in new ways.  "Intern" scares, tricks, turns, and has an underbelly of fire beneath beautiful melodies.

ROB:
Caleb McCoach
"With A Song"

Despite the immediate, effortless beauty of "With a Song," I take enjoyment in the fact that, most days, Im not convinced its the best track on Caleb McCoachs debut LP Songs From an Empty Shore. To paraphrase what I wrote at the time of the albums release: Once youve navigated the isolated minimalism that serves as the benchmark of this LP, the simple, restrained piano lines and gentle maracas of "With A Song" come across as lush as the largest symphony. This track is a foggyeyed release from the tortured, crises of faith that appear like street signs along the journey that is Songs From an Empty Shore. I love that its a song about the healing power of songs. I love its honesty. I love the ease with which the lyrics drip from Calebs tongue. I love the way it could dance by unnoticed on the jukebox of a dusty barroom. Yet, if you give it the attention it deserves, it can reduce you to tears.

JOHN:
Armand Hammer
"Frog and Toad are Friends"

More than any song I listened to in 2013, Armand Hammers "Frog and Toad are Friends" is the one that consistently reminded me why I love music so much in the first place.  The songs raw, hypnotic production from Marmaduke and no-chorus, tag team vocal approach from billy woods and Elucid is clearly more influenced by the likes of the Wu-Tang Clan and MF DOOM than anything from the modern rap scene, but this is not throwback rap.  Elucid and woods mix traditional skills and aesthetics with challenging perspectives and wordplay to create multidimensional music that feels familiar and fresh at the same time.  While Elucid and billy woods are both experts at creating layered concept songs, "Frog and Toad are Friends" is perhaps the best example of the duo just flexing their rapping chops Run The Jewels style and the results are spectacular.

Bengis Top 25 Hip Hop Releases of 2013

Bengis Top 25 Hip Hop Releases of 2013

Below you will find my 25 favorite hip hop releases of 2013.  I say releases because while Ill always been an album guy, when an EP or mixtape is good enough to be ranked among the albums Im going to rank it appropriately.  Im not strictly a hip hop head (albums from Jason Isbell, Kurt Vile, and White Denim would rank in my top 10 overall), but I decided to focus on hip hop in order to give less heralded releases the attention they deserve.  The majority of the reviews Ive linked below were written during my time at Robs blog ThoughtOnTracks.com and the rest were posted here at WeListenForYou.com.

25

Roc Marciano
Marci Beaucoup

http://manbitesdogrecs.bandcamp.com/album/marci-beaucoup

Roc Marcianos producer album doesnt feel like a solo album because of the abundance of mostly mediocre guests, but he still makes sure the album is a success by appearing on every song and keeping the production fresh throughout.  Hell always be more well known for his rapping, but Marci Beaucoup is a reminder that Roc should always be in the discussion for the best producer/MC in the game.

24

 Uncommon Nasa
Land of the Way It Is

https://uncommonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/land-of-the-way-it-is

Uncommon Nasa has worn many hats throughout his career as an engineer, producer, MC, and label head.  His Uncommon Records label has always been a forward thinking independent outfit that puts the art first.  Aeon Greys self produced solo album Lead Breakfast (which also finds a home on my top 25 list) was perhaps the labels best release to date, but Nasa made sure to capitalize Aeons success by dropping a standout solo album of his own in Land Of The Way It Is.  Nasa is more known for his beats than his work behind the mic, but he outsources a ton of great production and shines lyrically on autobiographical tracks like "Pasta With Butter" and "Background Check".

Illogic & Blockhead

 22

Chance The Rapper
Acid Rap

http://www.datpiff.com/Chance-The-Rapper-Acid-Rap-mixtape.483826.html

Acid Rap is one of those little albums that blows up that truly warrants the hype behind it.  It took me a minute to come around to it and its still hard for me to listen to from beginning to end, but when its good its really good.

21

MarQ Spekt & Gary Wilson
Broken Mazes

http://broken-mazes.bandcamp.com/album/broken-mazes

MarQ Spekt is one of my favorite MCs and this short (6 songs) project made with old Gary Wilson tracks from the 70s had psych-rap classic written all over it from the jump, but for some reason or another it didnt last more than a week or two in my regular listening rotation.  That all changed when I was in vacation in Jamaica furiously scanning my iPod for some hip hop to listen to that felt right for the beach in between all the reggae.  Enter Broken Mazes.  When it dropped I said it felt like Bitches Brew with lyrics, and that dynamic can make a killer beach sunset in Negril that much better.

20

Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels

http://foolsgoldrecs.com/runthejewels/

A victory lap of sorts riding on the coattails of both of their superior El-P produced solo albums from the year before, Run The Jewels was still a smashing success and an uncompromising concept album from two hip hop veterans reaching their career climaxes at the same time.  A followup has already been plotted out and this veteran odd couple is proving its possible to raise your profile and stay true to your uncompromising roots at the same time.

19

Homeboy Sandman
All That I Hold Dear

REVIEW

18

YC The Cynic
GNK

http://ycthecynic.bandcamp.com/

Id never heard of YC the Cynic before some of his videos for GNK started gaining traction in promotion of its late August release.  He was clearly talented and thoughtful, but all it took was one listen to GNK to tell that YC was a fully formed artist and not just a young MC tracing a few legendary influences.  Another newcomer, Frank Duke, produced the album front to back and gives the album a polish that helps YCs hard hitting concepts come to life.

Natti

REVIEW

16

Killah Priest
The Psychic World of Walter Reed

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/psychic-world-walter-reed/id600580834

If Killah Priests monstrous double album The Psychic World of Walter Reed would have been trimmed to a single disc, I might have ranked it even higher than 16.  The albums daunting length doesnt devalue it too much though because with Killah Priest its not about the high points.  Its about the journey.  I prefer the first disc, but theres not a bad song in the bunch from the veteran Wu-Tang affiliate whos quietly carved out a pretty legendary solo career.

15

Quelle Chris
 Ghost At The Finish Line

http://mellomusicgroup.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-at-the-finish-line

Quelle Chriss outstanding debut album for Mello Music Group Ghost At The Finish Line didnt make my first draft for my top 25 albums of 2013 as I had just recently caved in and bought it on the strength of the single/video "Superfuck".  I had been sleeping on Chris hard for the last couple years, but once I really gave the album a serious listen it not only forced its way on the list but climbed all the way up to number 15.  One of the most fun listens of 2013, Ghost At The Finsh Line is filled with existential and even depressing subject matter, but Chriss sense of humor and ear for beats give the album balance and re-listenability.
