Before and After Basement Bathroom Makeover

Before and After Basement Bathroom Makeover

Weve come a long way, folks. Operation "Hide the Bidet" in the guest bathroom/laundry room is complete! This is a big step in making the weirdest room in our house prettier and more functional. Lets take a look at where we started, shall we?

In case you missed the intro post to this room back in February, heres the quick version: our second bathroom and laundry room share a very awkward space in the basement. The landlord was clearly on a shoestring budget based on some of the fixture choices and didnt think the space through very well. BUT, he did decide to include a bidet - how lovely right?! Just kidding. For my European friends, I realize this isnt strange to you, but if you look closely, this bidet doesnt even function like a bidet - it has a down-facing faucet. Its pretty much useless and not a great use of space in a small home like ours.

I decided to do something about it and chose to figure out a way to hide the bidet and bring in more storage.

After lots of brainstorming, measuring, and brainstorming some more, I finally settled on a solution from good ole IKEA: a hacked VITTSJO shelving unit.

Heres the star of our show in all her glory...

For reference, the original IKEA VITTSJO looks like this:

I had to assemble it without the bottom shelf so it fit over top of the bidet. Once I put the shelving unit into place, it mostly concealed the bidet. To really make sure it was well-hidden, I installed that leftover solid bottom shelf in front of the unit by sitting it on top of the existing bottom brackets where it wouldve normally been installed. Then I secured it with a leftover shelf arm. That parts hard to explain in words, but take a look at the photo closely and I think youll see what I mean.

That left me with a hidden bidet and three shelves of new storage in this bathroom/laundry room. Hooray! For now, Im using SKUBB boxes for organization, but my next project is cleaning/organizing other closets in our house, so that may change. Well see.

Im storing our extra toilet paper in one box...

Laundry items and socks that are missing their other halves in another...(our dog, Jackson, likes to take socks out of the hamper and hide them all over the house, so we have an abundance of missing socks)

And extra guest towels in the last one.

I love having that stuff all put away and organized!

One unexpected fun addition to the room was the chance to hang this old framed print advertising a French restaurant. I found this in my parents basement when we were moving last summer and hadnt found a good spot for it in our house...until now. After I took down the awkwardly high shelf that was on that wall, there was a perfect spot for art.

And who doesnt love fresh flowers in a bathroom? These pretty daffodils came from my parents yard. Spring hasnt quite sprung here in Philly, but having these pretty things around sure makes it feel like it until flowers start blooming here :).

So thats my bathroom update for today. Im so glad I can cross that one off the list.

Heres one more before and after of the space before I go!

Now onto more organization projects. Next on the list are those closets!

Before we begin

Before we begin

"Many arguments appear to be about conclusions, when theyre almost always about premises."

Before I begin, I think its important to lay out exactly what I mean when I use certain words and phrases. Then if you disagree with me, you can decide if were arguing about conclusions or premises. :)

Testing - I use Cem Kaners definition of testing:
Testing is an empirical investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the product or service under test.

To me, testing is more of a social science than a computer science. So what does that definition above actually mean? Lets break it down:

Empirical Investigation: "Based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience" (Oxford English Dictionary)

Lets look at Adriaan de Groots empirical cycle:
from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Empirical_Cycle.svg

Observation: Observe some attribute of the application: "I observe a screen with two text input fields.  One has "username" next to it, and the other has "password" next to it. There is a "login" button and there is a "register" hyperlink.
Induction: Formulating hypothesis: In my experience, screens that have these fields in them are called "login screens" and allow registered users to access content and restrict non-registered from accessing the content.
Deduction: Creating a testable prediction based on your hypothesis:  I have not registered for this site, therefore, if I enter my login details, I should be denied access.
Testing: Test the hypothesis:  I enter "aaronhodder" in the username field, and "password" in the password field.  "Access Denied" displays.
Evaluation: Evaluate the outcome of the testing: It behaved how I expected it to behave. I have evidence that this screen may be working in a way that is consistent with other web applications.

But were not finished

Observation: "Access denied" displays
Induction: "Access denied" displays when any user, registered or not, enters their login details
Deduction: If I enter the details of a registered user, then "Access denied" will display
Testing: Obtain the details of a known registered user and enter them in the text fields.  I am allowed access to the restricted part of the site
Evaluation: Hypothesis was incorrect, and I have further evidence that the screen may be working in a way that is consistent with other web applications
etc
etc
and so the cycle continues.

Note that the definition I use puts the testers skills at evaluation and judgement at the centre of the testing process, not tools, or scripts.  Context over process.  Requirements over requirements documents.

Stakeholders: Developers, project managers, customers, clients, the business.  Anyone who holds a stake in the project.  It is important to know who your stakeholders are, and what is important to them to ensure that the information you are providing is useful.
Information: Examples of information: Does it do what we claim it does? Does it do what the customer wants it to do?  What defects have we found?
Quality: Here I use Gerald Weinbergs definition: Quality is value to some person with Cem Kaners addendum: ...that matters.  Quality is value to some person that matters.  Part of the testers role is to discover who the people are that matter, and what they value.

So thats the sum of its parts. The whole is of course much larger, and that is that testing is an active investigative process to discover and report important information about the product or service to the people that ought to know it.

I hope this makes future posts easier to understand and debate by framing it in the above context.

Before an Examination Campus Sonnets 1 Stephen Vincent Benet

Before an Examination Campus Sonnets 1 Stephen Vincent Benet

Carrying on with the theme...
(Poem #1904) Before an Examination (Campus Sonnets: 1)
The little letters dance across the page,
 Flaunt and retire, and trick the tired eyes;
Sick of the strain, the glaring light, I rise
Yawning and stretching, full of empty rage
At the dull maunderings of a long dead sage,
 Fling up the windows, fling aside his lies;
Choosing to breathe, not stifle and be wise,
And let the air pour in upon my cage.

The breeze blows cool and there are stars and stars
Beyond the dark, soft masses of the elms
That whisper things in windy tones and light.
 They seem to wheel for dim, celestial wars;
And I -- I hear the clash of silver helms
Ring icy-clear from the far deeps of night.
-- Stephen Vincent Benet
Another evocative trip down memory lane. "Before an Examination" has much
the same theme and tone as Whitman's "When I Heard the Learned Astronomer",
however, perhaps because I have indeed known the tedium of staying up all
night doggedly studying for an exam, I am far more inclined to sympathise
with Benet than I was with Whitman.

Benet's campus sonnets [see links for all four] form an oddly mismatched
set - the tone, the subject matter and the quality of the verse are all
surprisingly variable. They do have a certain indefinable something,
though - an occasional glimpse of the Benet who penned such masterpieces as
"Winged Man" and "The General Public" - that makes them worth a read.
Today's is arguably the best and definitely the smoothest of the lot; at
any rate it was the one I found the most enjoyable, though I felt "Talk"
had the potential to be a far better poem. I'd recommend going and reading
all four as a sequence - they are, as I noted, not really coherent, but they
complement each other nevertheless.

Before After Ashley Goforth Design

Before After Ashley Goforth Design

Six years ago I wrote a story about a house in West University – it was small, but impeccably decorated which is why it caught my eye.  It was highly edited, clean lined and sophisticated, with furniture and accessories that were top quality.  What was most inspiring was the house really had no architectural features - a typical 1930s original bungalow that couldn’t even be called a charming cottage - yet the interior designer made you overlook that fact and think you were in a larger, custom house.

image
The bungalow was beautifully designed by Ashley Goforth who runs her own design firm. Once the bungalow sold, the new owners loved what Ashley had done with the house so much, that they hired her to design it again, this time for the new owners.   She even used some of the same furniture which purchased from the previous owners.  What a compliment to Ashley!   I can’t think of another time where the former and present owners both used the same designer.  The story of that bungalow is HERE.

image
BEFORE: The bungalow:  The original living room – Ashley used light fabrics and silk curtains mixed with contemporary tables.

 image
BEFORE:  Two antique chairs add a contrast to the contemporary side chairs.

image
AFTER:  The new owners kept the silk curtains and furniture, but added gilt antique chairs.

image
AFTER:  The biggest change is in the dark grey fabrics on the sofa and pillows.  This one change made the room seem fresh and bit more modern.

   image
BEFORE:  A skirted table with slipped chairs fills the dining area.

image
AFTER:  A new lantern, sconces, French chairs, and a Swedish console updated the dining room for the new owners.

image
BEFORE:  An oversized tufted headboard becomes the focal point, along with silk curtains and dark chocolate walls.

image
AFTER:  The same room, with new mirrored nightstands and round accent mirrors, along with a print pillow made the room new for the current owners.
Over the years, I’ve shown the work of Ashley Goforth a few times – I really love her aesthetic.  It’s fresh and modern yet she uses fine antiques to create a look that appeals to the younger set, as well as the more seasoned (hmph!) crowd.
While perusing the HAR web site, I came upon a house for sale in West University that stopped me in my tracts.  It’s so rare that you find a house that is professionally decorated and in a way that would be put in a magazine – that when you do, it seems so dramatic!   I kept looking at this house and was dying to know – who designed it?   A little bit of research lead me to Ashley Goforth (of course) but even more fun, was that the owners of this house were the original owners of the bungalow that I had showed so many years ago!!!  Wow!!
Ashley was so sweet to send me the professional photographs of the house for sale, and I found the BEFORE pictures so you can really appreciate the work that Ashley did  –  enjoy!!!!

image
BEFORE:  The red brick house is typical for the newer houses in West University built in the 1990s.  Pretty.

image
AFTER:  Whoa!  The change is amazing.  First Ashley painted the red brick – white, which is a very on trend thing to do.  This one change is immense.  Next, landscape designer Gregory Henry HERE pulled out the accent trees and shrubs and installed clipped box.  He also put in a brick sidewalk.  New wood gates add more interest, along with new oversized New Orleans styled lanterns.

image
AFTER:  A glimpse into the main hall, with the patterned zebra print runner on the stairs.

image
BEFORE:  The living room is rather plain with shutters and orange colored hardwoods.  A blank slate.

image
AFTER:  First Ashley stained the hardwoods a deep, dark brown.  Then, she painted the walls white.  Here, she added silk curtains with textured shades.  Modern artwork adds pops of color which are repeated in the pillows.
Much of the beautiful art work came from Kathy Dimmitt Contemporary Art - to see more, go  HERE.

image
The rug is textured with a pattern.  The light fixture is a modern Serge Mouille.  Love the gilt French chair with the stripe upholstery.  And on the left is Ashley’s signature antique – a chest.

image
From the real estate photographs – you can see the pattern in the rug a bit easier and to the right are two taupe velvet chairs.

image
Looking out towards the front hall.

AG Day1-5
A close up of the antique chest with the crystal lamp and sconces.  I love how Ashley mixes the old with the new.  She has a real talent for  vignettes and she always includes one in each room.

image
BEFORE:   Another blank slate.

image
AFTER:  Ashley mixed a contemporary table and chairs and art and with an antique chest and chandelier.

AG Day1-12
I love how the white chairs mix with the white trim in the curtains.

image
View into the foyer.

image
Close up view of the white trim on the silk curtains.

image
AFTER:  Unfortunately no before pictures, but here is the after Library.  Ashley used a pattern rug here and put a glossy stain on the paneling.  Simply elegant.

AG Day1-40
AFTER:  Ashley added a console sink, with contemporary mirror and crystal sconces.

image
Before:   plain mantel and boring shelves.

image
Before:  the view towards the kitchen.
                                                                                        image
AFTER:  A new mantel was installed along with mirrored door cabinets that replaced the boring shelves.  Genius!  Ashley painted the room white and the trim and French door were painted black.

image
Along the French doors she added white curtains with a black and white trim.

image
I love the mix of pillows and colors here!!!

image
Great mix of pillows - black and white stripe, silk velvet tiger, and the very trendy green.  They look so great together – as does the series of black and white prints.

image
A close up of the andirons – love!!!  The brass is repeated in the cabinets and in the floor lamps.

image
Close up of black chest and white lamps vignette against the back wall.

image
BEFORE:  The kitchen was a bit dated – just 15 years old and with new appliances, but it still needed a small facelift.

image
BEFORE:  The view towards the breakfast area.

image
AFTER:  Ashley first removed the tile floor and extended the newly dark hardwoods into the kitchen.  At that time, the island was removed and replaced with an industrial style movable one.    She left the backsplash but painted the bottom cabinets a dark grey and added new hardware.

image
A new contemporary light fixture was installed over the island, along with textured shades.  In the breakfast area another new light fixture was installed along with a banquette.  The French door was painted the same black as the adjoining family room and kitchen.

image
To further update the kitchen, the upper cabinets along one side were removed and a built in refrigerator was added, along with a wine cooler and new sink.

image
A  marble topped Saarinen table.

image
The new breakfast room – with a pop of turquoise color.

image
BEFORE:  Like most West University houses, the bedrooms are all upstairs.  Here the master has a fireplace which is not usual, and how romantic is that!!!   Again, this room is a blank slate.

image
AFTER:  Ashley install
