Basic features of WebInspect the kind of stuff great scanners are made of
Wondering what helps minimize the pain, stress and time required to run effective Web vulnerability scans? Its the things you can see in the toolbar of HPs WebInspect:

Start/Resume, Pause - because youre going to need to pause and resume your scans at some point.
Rescan - because youre going to want to re-run the scan again or re-test for the flaws uncovered previously.
Compare - because youre going to have a need to compare results for remediation validation testing, etc. eventually.
If you do this work enough, these types of vulnerability scanner features can have tremendous payoffs over the long haul.

Being an atheist has nothing to do with my protest of the pope today
Being an atheist has nothing to do with my protest of the pope today
Trying to write more - so heres a quick missive before I head out the door to todays protest. Whilst ill as a very ill thing.
I find it fascinating that it appears assumed that most people protesting the pope will be atheists. Is it true?
Either way that assumption allows Joseph Ratzinger to diminish all criticism as being the work of aggressive atheists hating God.
This morning as thousands head towards Hyde Park Corner to protest the easiest way that our comments can be ignored is by people being able to diminish the protest as purely atheist in nature.
That as an atheist I cant criticise the sexist treatment of women, or the luddite and murdering approach to contraception (especially with the regards to HIV and Africa), or the systematic and calculated cover up of the abuse of children because deep down Im really complaining that these people believe in God.
I find this absurd. But, listening to the words of the ppe during this trip, in all his silly hats surrounded by pomp and parade, Ive realised something. His comments against the secularising of UK society and marginalising of faith in this country is not a plee to become a Catholic. Although obviously he would like that. The reason for all these strong words is to fence off the secular and atheistic view point in the minds of the general public.
I think he wants to remind people that religion is magic, and thus so criticising it is dangerous, and even if you are apathetic towards it you need to respect it.
In addition, the unfair position that the Pope has been given due to his position as head of state (of a citizen-less state no less) is a reason to protest today all by itself. If we gave state visits to the heads of every faith then this would be acceptable, but as it stands the Pope has been given a position above any other faith to come to the UK and criticise our way of life. Which we will pay for the pleasure for.
So, that being the case, a defence of our way of life is just.
It isnt due to my lack of a belief in God that I protest today but because I do believe that, for all its flaws, when it comes to equality, family planning and religion this country is progressive and civilised and as such closer to any God than the man that today will wear a silly hat inside a stupidly named car who preaches famine as contraception and that no women can ever equal a man.
Even though, in my opinion, no God exists. Obviously.

Thai galangal root can fight cancer
According to London researchers from the Kings College, eating spicy Thai curry or other Thai food spiced with Galangal, could restrain the growth of cancer cells.
Tests have revealed that Galangal (Alpinia galanga) a ginger-like root know as Kha or Siamese ginger and in Thailand mostly used to flavor many Thai food dishes, appears to kill cancer cells.

Galangal, the ginger-like root, is used as an alternative treatment for stomach cancer in most of Thailand and also taken as an aphrodisiac.
The London researchers who tested galangal-root extracts on breast and lung cancer cells uncovered that the Thai herb reduced incidence of the disease more than three-times.
Experiments have proven the claim that galangal could treat cancer.
But we need to conduct more tests, said Professor Peter Houghton, study leader of the Kings College scientific team.
What is Galangal: The Thai herb Galangal (known in Thailand as Kha) is an erect annual plant with aromatic, ginger-like rhizomes. It is most commonly used in Thailand as a spice in Thai cooking and this for over 1,000 years. Galanga is also known as Siamese ginger or Kha
In Thailand and most other countries in Asia, the Galangal root is also used as an alternative medication for arthritis, diabetes, diarrhea, spasms and to combat inflammation and bacteria.
The name Galangal is a corruption of the Chinese word for ginger.

Galangal grows in Thailand, India and southern China, and has been introduced to the West by Greek and Arab physicians, its approximately 0.04 percent volatile oil has been proven to be very useful in many therapeutic treatments.

The recent events here in the United States have left me sad, disgusted, horrified, discouraged and downright angry that this is the world we live in. As I white woman married to a man of color, I know that we live in a world that is broken by hate, violence and systemic racism. I have no idea how I fit into change but I am starting by posting here that I am ready and willing contribute in any way that I can. I dont want to be silent, I dont want to be neutral and I DONT want to spend one more day afraid to speak out. All I know is there is movement, power and change in UNITY and I want to be a part of that unity!

behind door 1 The Conscious Pig
behind door 1 The Conscious Pig
I have a colleague who loves to apologize for his misogynistic comments. To begin, hell say something completely moronic, or something completely understandable--doesnt matter. What matters is that his incredibly astute and sophisticated understanding of feminist linguistic politics sends up a flag for him (go ahead and read something into that, if you can manage not to lose your lunch over the idea). The opportunity to bask in the glory of his brilliant realization overcomes him and he stops, always mid-sentence. "Im sorry. That was sooo mis-aaaah-gynistic." The ensuing conversation always involves at least three more opportunities for him to say misogynistic and at least one, but probably two opportunities to say some form of the word patriarchy. For a kicker, he always concludes that his original stupid-ass point must stand and that he has a bona fide need for the allegedly misogynistic term or concept. (This is just what the world needs, linguistic BFQs.) Listening to his self-congratulatory musings on the oppression of women is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon. (Can you see me batting my long luxurious Sienna eyelashes?)
---
Ive been lurking around here for a long time but havent managed to put up a real entry yet. Does this make me a slacker? That would be interesting since just being here seems to make everyone else a slacker. Nevertheless, I feel like a slacker for failing to post. So I thought Id debut with a theme that might provide me with more ideas for secrets to reveal later. If youre brave enough to join me in this game, just jump right in with "behind door #whatever.comes.next". My plan to help muddy the identity waters is to draw from lots of places and previous experiences, with just a dash of a pure fiction. That way the personalities wont add up to anything identifiable, or if they do add up to something-- You know the standard disclaimer.

BEHIND THE SCENES ON A SOUNDSTAGE
BEHIND THE SCENES ON A SOUNDSTAGE
When you watch a movie or a TV show, you rarely think about the set design, unless its something fabulous like Somethings Gotta Give the movie that influenced interiors for years. Most sets arent that noteworthy.
But but
Now that my new favorite show Outlander is in Season II in Paris, 18th century Paris, no less, the sets are fabulous and drool worthy. But, although the setting is Paris, most scenes are filmed at castles and gardens in Scotland and England locations that are substitutes for Paris, such as Wilton House was. The exterior scenes were filmed in Prague, not Paris. Not one scene was filmed in Paris at all.
The majority of the scenes take place on the soundstage that is located in Cumbernauld, Scotland. Certainly not Paris. Its hard to imagine how a soundstage in Scotland can become 18th Century Paris, but it does.
Recently Starz published pictures of the soundstage showing how the different sets were created. Since one of the most exquisites sets is Claire & Jamie Frasers Paris Mansion I thought I would show you how the soundstage set goes from this:
The empty soundstage in Cumbernauld, Scotland this soundstage then becomes Jamie & Claires Parisian house:
Yes. That huge, empty soundstage becomes this set which is so beautiful that when Caitriona Balfe who plays Claire first saw the set, said she wanted to move in here, for good.
Besides Starz releasing behind-the-scenes photos of the sets, they also showed the working models something I wish they had done on Season One!
The Production Designer is Jon Gary Steele, who is incredibly talented and the Set Decorator is Gina Cromwell. Whats the difference between the two? Steele designs the sets themselves hes the architect while the Set Decorator actually does the interior design. She shops for the furniture and accessories, just like any decorator would do. Ive never really understood the difference before between those two, until I saw the working models and drawings and realized that the Production Designer is probably an architect, or at least has drafting experience.
This is the to-scale model of Jamie & Claires apartment in Paris. Jon Gary Steele drew the plans by hand and then had the model made, which is, in turn, used by many of the other departments. In this plan, there is the 1) Exterior Courtyard 2) Winding Staircase and 3) Two Rooms: Living Room & Bedroom/Dining Rooms. The Exterior Courtyard is between the two rooms. Surrounding it all is a large hall that is completely wallpapered in a tapestry!
This view of the model shows the Exterior Courtyard in the middle. The room on the left is the living room. At the right is the bedroom/dining room. You can see that the hall behind the rooms has its own tapestry wallpaper laid out TO SCALE!
A model of the winding staircase with a to-scale actress to be sure it all is correctly proportioned. Behind the stairs is a large oval oeil de boeuf window, which is typically 18th century.
The set is starting to be built. The rooms are all upstairs so that their French Doors will overlook the courtyard, as they would in real life.
This is the FOURTH soundstage that Starz/Outlander has built in Cumbernauld, Scotland for this series. Just imagine for a minute the amount of business this one show has brought to this quiet region.
Cumbernauld, a new Scotland town of 50,000 was just recently developed in the 1950s as an offshoot of Glasgow. Once Outlander is canceled (NO!!!) then other movie productions can rent out the soundstage. Cumbernauld is hoping to become a destination for film, just as Hollywood is, and then Vancouver became, and on and on.
The building of the apartment continues. In the center is the Exterior Courtyard which is located on the ground floor. The apartment is on the second floor, which allows the French Doors to look down onto the courtyard.
Realize, also, that the apartment is just one of four main sets built on these soundstages: The Apothecary, The Brothel, and Louises Apartment are also built from scratch.
And the scaffolding goes up to build the winding staircase with the oval window.
A peek at the staircase. This will be where many important scenes will take place.
The two rooms of the apartment with the exterior courtyard below. Those are the windows where the French doors will be.
Inside looking out the French doors with their Juliet balconies, overlooking the courtyard. The walls are painted a French blue/green with gilt moldings.
The crown moldings are gilded, along with pilasters.
Real wood flooring in a Chevron Pattern. (Notice, this is not Herringbone. In Chevron the points meet flush. In herringbone, the points are staggered:)
Personally, I wish they had chosen to use the Versailles Pattern. After all, this is 18th century France and they are hanging out with the King of France at Versailles! But maybe Versailles Parquet was just TOO expensive to replicate.
The Set Decorator has shown up with fabric to test against the wall color. How many times have we all done this!!?!
The Hallway: the tapestry was painted on canvas. Amazing! Since it was on canvas, it will be able to be used again on another set.
The arch in the Exterior Courtyard is built the arch is where the carriages drive through. Above is the apartment, overlooking the courtyard.
And, here we go! Claire is in her carriage in the streets of Paris! Just dont tell her she is actually in Prague. Caitriona said when she heard Season 2 was in 18th Century Paris she was so excited, until she found out they werent going to Paris but were going to be filming in Prague and Cumbernauld. Major disappointment although everyone ended up loving Prague.
The Courtyard:
Now, this is Hollywood magic. Claires carriage is seen in Prague going through the arches to her apartment. And then ..
Viola! Her carriages goes through the arch in Prague, and ends up at the Courtyard on Cumbernauld, Scotlands soundstage.
The soundstage Courtyard. Not quite 18th century cobblestones, but they are a good substitute.
The courtyard. Thats the front door to the apartment. I just wish the stone was a bit more cream than beige. Thats more in keeping with 18th century Paris.
Claire, in her apartment, looking at the courtyard from her Juliet balcony. I love this Dior dress.
Every detail is thought of: park benches, fountains, lanterns.
The front door with brass hardware and antique French lanterns.
The Entry Hall:
The entry hall with its stone floor. The door opens to a niche with a beautiful vase. At the left is a sconce and a bust.
And here Claire returns home; her butler lets her in. Shes not accustomed to such luxury! Just a month ago she was struggling in the freezing Scotland, and now she is a Lady Of Leisure in Paris, which makes for much conflict.
The Stairs:

Baserunning for the Ages
Baserunning for the Ages

Ive been writing mostly about defense over at Baseball Prospectus and here in the past couple of months and so I thought Id revisit the topic of baserunning today.
Although in my column I talked about the greatest baserunners of the Retrosheet era and here have extolled the virtues of Tim Raines, Robin Yount and others, I noticed that Ive failed in either venue to list the top and bottom single seasons of that era.
So today here are the top and bottom 50 baserunning seasons in terms of total Equivalent Baserunning Runs (EqBRR). And dont forget that an essay describing the system and its metrics titled "The Tortoise, the Hare, and Juan Pierre" appears in Baseball Prospectus 2008, which Im told, is shipping now. Also, Ill be talking about the book with Christina Kahrl and Nate Silver Wednesday, March 5th at 7:30 pm at the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Historic LoDo in Denver.
First, the top 50 seasons.

Luis Castillo 2007 1.0 0.6 1.1 3.1 3.8 528 9.6 1.51As you can probably tell most of these top 50 are driven by high EqSBR scores with Maury Wills 1962 season at the top of the heap. There were a few players though, like Lonnie Smith in 1985 who excelled despite pedestrian work stealing bases. Related to that point youll also notice that the final column we have a rate statistic titled EqBRRate. I explained the idea behind it in the column cited above.
...it turns out that when many folks talk about baserunning, theyre not really thinking about discretionary stolen base attempts, but instead that combination of speed, risk taking, and judgment that goes into evaluating situations, and that when aggregated leads us to assert that a particular player is a good baserunner. Since EqSBR is primarily comprised of stolen base attempts (with a few pickoffs thrown in) our new rate statistic, which well christen Equivalent Baserunning Rate (EqBRRate), will omit this aspect. So as you can see Smiths 1985 season actually comes out on top with a EqBRRate of 1.85 easily topping the 1986 season of Eric Davis at 1.55. The lowest rate out of the top 50 is Ron LeFlores 1980 season where he was actually below 1.00 at 0.99 but made the top 50 by virtue of his 11.0 EqSBR.
So...well define EqBRRate as the ratio of actual or total runs to expected runs contributed across the four remaining metrics. Since both values for individual opportunities consider the context and are weighted appropriately (an EqOAR opportunity has both a lower expected and usually actual run value associated with it than an opportunity of EqHAR) and since were eliminating EqSBR, both weaknesses discussed above addressed. To illustrate how this works, lets consider Chone Figgins 2007 season:

Taking the context of the opportunities into account, we would have expected Figgins to net +14.2 runs across the four metrics, but he actually contributed +19.0 runs. When we divide the total by the expected we get a ratio of 1.34, indicating that he contributed, or manufactured if you will, 34 percent more runs than expected.
And now the bottom 50...

There are some real "ice wagons" here (in the parlance of the dead ball era referring to poor baserunners) of course although many of these as well are here because they did so poorly in EqSBR (Tony Bernazard, Jose Cruz, and Kenny Lofton are three notable examples). The Indians Ryan Garko makes the list with his 2007 campaign primarily because he was thrown out trying to advance on hits five times - all at the plate - on his way to an historic -7.7 runs on EqHAR.
From a pure baserunning perspective Clete Boyer with his 1970 campaign ranks dead last at 0.21 with Bob Kearney in 1984 at 0.29 and Garko close behind. Loftons 1997 season is the only one with a rate of 1.00 or higher at 1.06 but his EqSBR of -9.4 sinks him.
